“Indescribable bliss arises in the heart of the yogi
who meditates on the inner sound.” — Hatha Yoga Pradipika Naada yoga is one of many of powerful traditional yogic practices rooted in sound. Specifically, naada yoga is the practice of deep listening to sound. We can think of naada yoga and kirtan — the popular form of devotional chanting — as complimentary practices. Chanting kirtan is outward-facing, communal, expressive of the yearning to unite with the divine. Naada yoga, by contrast, is introspective, solitary, silent, a receptive listening for the divine residing within.
The ancient hatha yogis, developed the practice of naada yoga by listening to sounds within the body, like the sound of the breath, heartbeat or circulation. Gradually they were able to hear finer and finer sounds, leading them to the perception of the anahata or “unstruck sound” of pure consciousness thought to reside in the heart. The sound meditation of naada yoga was the final step in the hatha yogi’s quest for Realization. In this workshop we will learn the practice of naada yoga, methodically building the skill of deep listening. Few can hear the sound of pure consciousness initially. So, we begin at the beginning, with the significance and use of OM. Ann will then skillfully lead us in guided practices to develop our ability to listen, calling on music, voice and the sounds of nature. We will chant mantras, sing ragas and bathe in the sounds of Tibetan bowls, Indian tanpura, and Ann’s magical voice. With Ann’s guidance we will progress toward the more subtle listening for internal sounds, moving our awareness through deeper and deeper layers of silence. Whether you’re looking for a peak into the ultimate reality or just hoping for a moment’s peace, naada yoga is a tremendous tool for enriching our modern lives. 21st century life is noisy, distracted, and highly-visual — even communication is increasingly written. Spending time away from the screen and submerging ourselves in the auditory experience of life can bring us greater peace, depth and connection to ourselves and one another. Join Ann for this rare, afternoon of learning, chanting and listening for inner peace. Return home feeling refreshed and relaxed, with some new tools for bringing depth and quiet to your yoga and your life. No experience necessary. |
